Did you know the rhododendron is the national flower of Nepal? But you needn’t go all the way to catch a glimpse. We have them aplenty in our country, and you have a chance to catch more than just a glimpse as we trek through Sikkim.
Our trek covers the higher reaches of the Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary in West Sikkim, part of which forms the border with Nepal. The sanctuary houses 13 different varieties of rhododendron species. And not to forget rare birds like the Himalayan Monal and Rusty-bellied Shortwing, besides many varieties of Flycatchers, Laughingthrushes, and Babblers.
The trek begins at Hilley, and continues to Lasune, Joreybotey, Thulo Dhap, and Chewa Bhanjyang, and then descends to Uttarey and Darap till we finally reach Pelling. All the while you rustle and hustle through dense rhododendron forests.
Visit the ever-enchanting, wish-fulfilling lake at Khecheopalri. It is believed that leaves are not allowed to float on the lake – the birds keep a keen watch and pick them up as soon as they drop into the lake.
Tantalize your taste buds with traditional cuisine at Darap village, and visit the Pemayangtse Monastery, one of the oldest and most important monasteries in Sikkim.
Did we mention we will stay in tents like serious trekkers? Camping has never been more fun.
Did you know rhododendrons bloom bright red one year and white the next? Join WeGoBondon a thrilling trek that takes us through forests, and feast yourself on magnanimous views of the snow-clad Khangchendzonga range all along. Find out what’s in store for you – red or white bloom.
