Be it the stunning views of some of the world’s highest mountains, magnificent monasteries, an aura of peace and meditation, or the warm people, and despite its tragic past and painful present, Tibet has fascinated travellers from across the world for years.

Our trip takes flight in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. This has been done so as to complete the necessary formalities to gain the visa for Tibet.

Enjoy a welcome dinner, offering the best of traditional Nepalese cuisine. Sightseeing around Kathmandu includes the Pashupatinath temple complex, the Boudhanath stupa, and the Swayambhunath, or the Monkey Temple. Also enjoy a visit to Bhaktapur, a World Heritage Site rich in antiquities. Thereafter enjoy unparalleled views of the Himalayas at Dhulikhel.

Rightly called the ‘Roof of the World’, the Tibetan plateau stands the highest in the world, at an average of 4,500 metres above sea level. Be prepared to be whisked away, over the mighty Himalayas, to Lhasa, the capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region. Once we are acclimatized to the high altitude of Tibet, we begin our road trip across the mainland. An unforgettable drive to Xigate will leave you mesmerized as we will drive along the Brahmaputra route. In Xigate, visit Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, one of the largest in Tibet. View the remarkable Thangka Wall here, built by the 1st Dalai Lama in 1468.

We then proceed to Gyantse, where you will visit the Gyantse Dzong, the 14th century fortress, and one of the best preserved in the country, and other points of historical significance. As we leave Gyantse and proceed towards Lhasa, we will also visit the KaroLa Glacier, Yamadroke Lake, and Kamba Pass.

Back in Lhasa, we will visit the Potala Palace – the winter abode of the 14th Dalai Lama until he fled to India in 1959. An evening visit of the lit-up palace will leave you mesmerized. Also visit the PhurRong Kha and Drepung monasteries. Following a visit to all these monasteries, sit back and enjoy what nature has to offer at the enormous Namtso Lake.

Oh, in the midst of all the sightseeing, you can also get your hair braided the Lhasa way! (Google images, if you aren’t aware and are, perhaps, curious.) And gorge on Lhasa beer and endless cups of yak-butter tea. Join WeGoBondon its maiden Tibetan sojourn and explore the incomparable beauty of the Roof of the World.
